Onkyo A800: Measurement and third-party pads

frequency response of Onkyo A800 – forgot to do averages on these so applied 1/6 smoothing instead

Headphone: Onkyo A800

Tonality: balanced with bass boost, which is extremely rare for open-backed cans. Uncoloured mids and smooth highs. A tad more laid-back than Harman-neutral thus makes for easier listening over long sessions.

Technicality: nothing really stands out: resolution is there, imaging is ok, soundstage is decent but not huge. Typical mid-fi cans performance. But what more could one ask for with such excellent tone?

Enough said – the A800 are really a hidden gem. All-rounder sound with no real flaws. Oratory1990 has also measured them and my measurement basically lines up with his. My complains are mostly ergonomics and build. I can’t seem to find official replacement for the pads. Luckily some velour pads I randomly bought fit perfectly on them, and does little to change to the sound. Their cable pinout is also quite weird so you can’t use other hifiman/focal/beyer cables on them. Also weighs quite a bit. But in terms of sound, these are strikingly good.

Pads: with the suede pads you get extra bass boost and slightly more linear treble (the pads attached in the photo are the suede pads)

  1. Hi, can you please help me finding earpads for A800? I cannot find anything for my H900m which is basically a closed version of A800. Thanks

    1. Hi mate, I wasn’t able to find the original ear pads for sale either. But you’d be able to fit regular 105-110mm ear pads on the A800. Not sure if that’s also true for the H900M, though.
