[LEGACY] Measurement of Audeze LCD2 Rev2 ‘Unicorn Edition’ and Pad Rolling

Bought my pair from used market (serial number starts with 532, some call them the ‘unicorn edition‘). Lush and enveloping sound, just lacking some ‘bite’ in the mids/upper mids, making vocals sound very full-bodied albeit a bit too laid back. Let’s get into pad rolling.

(OG is in green, not blue, same below…)

I picked this based on Dekoni’s own measurements. As always, I found Dekoni’s measurement somewhat inaccurate. But they do point out that these pads have less upper treble. Note these pads are also much deeper and plusher than the original leather pads. They feel like really premium suede albeit price is not high. So a huge step up in comfort, but sound-wise not really my pick.

These are third-party real leather pads made by a Chinese manufacturer. Sonically very similar to the original pads, but with a deeper opening that allows your ears to fit into the pads more comfortably. By increasing the front volume of air these pads also boost the upper-mids and treble slightly. Vocals take a step forward and is clearer. Instrument realism also improves slightly. As such these pads I consider to be a step up from stock pads, while retaining the full leather feel.

These are made by the same manufacturer above, but with fenenstrations (perforations). As such they boost upper mids and treble to a further degree. Thanks to a more linear treble between 4khz to 9khz, instruments now are a lot more neutral than in stock form. Vocals are less lush or warm, but clearer and more ‘articulate’. Some may not prefer these changes though, as they would mean taking away some of the defining qualities of the Audeze house sound. Personally I find vocals still very enjoyable with these pads though, and they are definitely a step towards neutrality. But this is a decision you have to make yourself.

Remarks on pad rolling: although the above only showcase the changes to a specific version of the LCD2, the underlying rationale should be the same when considering pad rolling though. Audezes typically have scooped upper mids, and lack energe in specific treble areas. To make up for these you would generally need a more breathable pads, with a larger room in the front opening. Perforations also help.
